A PLACE TO CALL HOME

Whitehaven is a Georgian town and port on the west coast of Cumbria, near the Lake District, Northern Lakes in England. Historically in Cumberland, it lies by road 38 miles (61 km) south-west of Carlisle and 45 miles (72 km) to the north of Barrow-In-Furness.

It lies in the Solway Firth facing Kirkcubright and also the Isle of Whithorn in Scotland and depending on which way you view, you can get a glimpse of the Ramsey tip of the Isles Of Man

The town’s growth was largely due to the exploitation of the extensive coal measures and was also a major port for trading with the American Colonies (Cotton, Coffee, Tobacco, Sugar & Rum) and was, at one time the busiest port in the UK. It also supported a healthy fishing fleet with many trawlers baring the local ‘WA’ registration code.

The Town/Harbour was the only ever recorded place where an attack from the American Navy was ever attempted on British soil, when the Rebel patriot John Paul Jones raided the town in 1778, setting fire to some merchant ships in the harbour, before his attack was foiled by some of his ‘drunken’ shipmates who let the cat out of the bag in one of the many harbour drinking houses
